In 2004, the band The Ex had been together for 25 years. They organised a party in Paradiso with 68 very different musicians (from Ethiopia, Japan, America, Italy and Netherlands) and afterwards 35 of them went on a one week tour of France. A cinematic report.
Building A Broken Mousetrap is a documentary which combines the Ex's energetic live concert with footage that explores the parallels and contrasts of life in New York City with the band's home base of Amsterdam.
This finds the Ex working with a small symphony orchestra, with fantastic results. Songs range from the melancholic to joyous, and from tightly orchestrated melodies to glorious chaos, often all over the course of one piece.
The Dutch term for free improvisation translates literally as "instant composition" — hence the title of Instant, a 32-improv, double-CD set that finds the Ex's instrumentalists joined for duos and trios by a party's worth of guests
"The Ex and Tom Cora have joined forces again for another passionate and eclectic release."
"Judging from this album, it was a stroke of genius to match Tom Cora's earthy, aggressive cello with the bludgeoning force of The Ex at full throttle."
Singles. Period is beautiful and relatively comprehensive: well, as comprehensive as you can get with such an anarchic back catalogue. It's eleven singles (some shared with other bands), and 25 songs, arranged chronologically and twitching all over the flat post-punk map.
Filmed over a two year period on tour in Europe and the U.S.A in squats, clubs and avant-garde jazz festivals, during rehearsals and at home with each member of the band. Interspersed with hilarious archive material and poetic sequences, the film gives a vivid and sparkling impression of an extraordinary band.
"Turn" contains fourteen new songs;...
"Product, politics and package make this the most outstanding incinerating concept single ever. The Ex create the perfect stimulating collision of art, pop and politics to date, musically subverting and visually building a forum of thought."
"A bracing blast of barbed wire guitar delivered at reasonable speed with clear (but passionate) vocals, "Aural Guerrilla" is one of "The Ex's" best;"
"Always was and still is my favourite blast of musical noise and anger from The Ex" Jon @ctive
A MCD 7 songs of the Dutch impro jazz punx.
"What makes them interesting, is their original musical approach, not hindered by technical ingenuity."
The album is riddled with harsh and humorous lyrical attacks on consumerism and pop culture ("Walt's Dizzyland"). The music is a beautiful barrage: drums trapped in an unrelenting rolling march, bass that thuds and throbs, and guitars that riff and skree from every possible direction.
The John Peel Sessions of the EX a wonderful little comp of their early classics.
"Musically, they sound like a rather more melodic version of Crass; politically, they are a lot harder and their lyrics are excellent... An unashamed political manifesto."
"This record is a joyful testimony to music's continuing ability to communicate ideas. They have opened up their frenetic grind to encompass 1,000 different rhythms. They're caught up in something unique."
"This time they pull up their wall of sound out of pieces of rock, folk and jazz... The Ex got the blues."
"The Ex, with 'Pokkeherrie' have produced a masterful killer weapon of raw power that rattles up the spine into numbed pink brain cells and fills the vacuum with social issue. "
"11 forceful, buzzing, in-your-face songs on Starters Alternators (produced by Steve Albini) are simultaneously political and personal, frenzied and beautiful, frenetic and tasteful. "Frenzy" and "Two Struck by the Moon" possess the taught, sharp delivery of early Wire, while "It's a Sin" sounds like Sonic Youth raised on Eastern...
"These fervent Dutch activists are seeking to hijack the trad rock format and fly it to their very own Cuba." Certainly one of their best releases.
"Tumult" is one of the Ex's more straight-ahead punk albums. Similar albums by the Ex include the snarling "Disturbing Domestic Peace" and the quick-and-punchy "History is What's Happening."
