Condition: Dead was formed in December 2007 by myself, Alex aka Al Symers, formerly vocalist for S.O.R.B. and London's Refuse/All.
After quitting Refuse/All in March 2007, for several reasons, many other band members coaxed him into carrying on in the movement.
'There's not many of us left' is one remark which springs to mind, that made him decide to carry on.
So the decision was to join an existing outfit that needed his services, or start a fresh.
And so Condition: Dead is the product of the latter. A band that is not out there for making hard cash, that are all pretty much equally minded and above all want to have fun making music with a serious message and entertain while we are at it!
The first to join the fold was Lord Brokitt aka Posh Trystan, was found through a mutual friend. Brokitt formerly played guitar for Norwich’s T.C.R. and bass for Stray Bullets. He had just moved to London and was looking for something to do, and so after several beery nights a close friendship was formed and so he was in playing bass.
Secondly, after advertising on the Internet a guitarist was found, and what a little gem he turned out to be! Spider, Jyrki, ex bass player for Finnish anarcho outfit Sekasorto, and former guitarist for Leeds based Action Directe.
When meeting with Symers and Brokitt for the first time, at the 12 Bar in Denmark St., Spider sat down and went to sleep at the side of the stage while one of the bands were playing!
But once in the practice studio with a guitar in his hands..... Amazing! So he has been named Spider Monkey because the little chap just gets everywhere!
As for a drummer, well there you go we had one and then we didn't, like a Genie he disappeared into thin air never to return any phone calls, how rude.
Then out of the blue, well Gumtree, came Madman Paul, who just wants to play gigs here there and everywhere. He also drums for Local Madman from SE London.
Sadly after a couple of months Paul decided he could not continue with us due to his other commitments and so we are now looking for a new beater!!
This was a complete shock especially after the fantastic first gig we had!
And so after a long hard search, many auditions out of the mist rose Angelo (aka Super Mario), a super hard hitting drummer from Italy.
In December 2008, after several gigs, things were not working out with Mario, and so we decided it was best to part company, and just by chance we stumbled across a new drummer, Jurgen Skinsmann, Matt, this is it, the drummer we have been searching for, a metalhead but who is totally into what we are doing, fan-bloody-tastic!
After plenty of practice and several gigs, we decided it was time to record our stuff, and so in December 2009 we went to Forest Hill, South London and recorded our album project, FAMOUS - For Fuck All, at Perry Vale Studio, which was engineered and produced by ex Vibrators bass player Pat Collyer.
We have to be the world’s most accident prone band!!!
Since our formation there have been several accidents injuring all members to the band from time to time, but in January 2010 Brokitt topped them all!
After staggering out of the Forum after seeing Cocksparrer, he lightly brushed a skinhead while trying to negotiate a lamppost, the said skinheads mate didn’t take to kindly to Brokitts apology and punched him to the floor, landing hands first Brokitt managed to break both his wrists in the fall.
So what do we do now?
Well we weren’t going to be kicked down.
I was speaking with Steve Cherree one day, and jokingly said ‘Steve mate, why not come and play for us?’, he asked for the tracks and came back with ‘Love to mate, that’s a bloody good album’, and so Steve joined as a stand in for Brokitt while he recovered.
Brokitt in the meantime doubled up on Vocals with me, much to his indignation!!! But we didn’t want to leave our Punk Fashionista out of the fun.
When I formed this band, I had always envisaged it to be a 5 piece, 2 guitar outfit, but over time the rest of the band had always put up some resistence, wanting to keep us a 4 piece, but now I could play the master card!!!
The band loved having Steve play with us, due to his commitment and all round sense of fun, so I suggested that when Brokitt was healed that he played second guitar and we kept Steve on as permanent bass player if he wanted to, and we see what it sounded like.
Well, after our first practice with 2 guitars, it sounded great, I asked Steve if he wanted to stay on with us, and he was chuffed to be asked.
Personally this is my perfect band, a bunch of guys who love punk rock, want to entertain and get on with each other so well, we have our moments but who doesn’t.
We have also been lucky enough to support some great bands: The Disrupters, Zounds, Eastfield, Angelic Upstarts, The Warriors, Lost Cherrees and Shag Nasty to name a few, we are also due to support The Subhumans in August 2010 at The Underworld, and are planning a trip to Finland for late 2010/early 2011.
SO WATCH OUT....
