The book is based on our last festival in 2008 in Belgrade which had an emphasis on Antifascist movement and direct action. The book is a documentation of the performances (directed by Jet Moon) and the panel discussions with activists from Turkey (Lambda Istanbul), Russia (Antifa Moscow, Indymedia Russia), the Netherlands (NoBorder), Serbia (Kontrapunkt, Antifa Zrenjanin, Women at Work) and the UK (Roma activist, queer people of color activists). We focused on exchanging opinions and experiences on forms of direct action, antifascist movements, anti-racist movements in the different contexts.

 

 

During the festival 2008 fascists (from the group “Obraz”) attacked participants and organizers of Queer Beograd festival.

Several days before our 2008 festival, ignoring our requests not to do so, a freedaily newspaper in Belgrade announced our gathering on its front page as ‘The 5th clandestine gay festival’. This created a huge public visibility for the event, which we had previously avoided, in order to create a safe space. This time the majority of citizens were aware of our festival.

Despite the increased precautions on our part and the usual unavoidable police protection, a group of 15 right-winged hooligans from „Obraz“ attacked the participants and members of Queer Beograd on September 19, 2008. Although we fought back and the police responded quickly, several people were injured, one suffering a broken arm and a concussion.
The festival continued as planned, but as a collective we needed to reconsider our capacities in terms of visibility in a society that is structurally homophobic and patriarchally violent.

Furthermore the attack showed how important a strong queer antifascist
movement is. This is a motivation for our work, which this project is a part of.
